Bullshit Jobs was, for me, a worldview-altering, I-will-reference-this-book-for-the-rest-of-my-life type of book.¹ So I picked up David Graeber’s earlier book, The Utopia of Rules, and OH BOY. Rather than having one central thesis like Bullshit Jobs, it’s a collection of essays around a central theme: bureaucracy in its modern, late-stage. A utopia (/ j uː ˈ t oʊ p i ə / yoo-TOH-pee-ə) is an imagined community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens.

It looks as far back as the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks, highlighting the construct of utopia as applied to the world of work. The Safety Utopia describes the implicit hope that vitality and safety can come together.

This longing is an illusion and it is not without danger - a utopia is also a power fantasy in which control and punishment play a major role. A great deal is expected from criminal law, but that can hardly bring a safety utopia any closer.

A book often referenced but seldom read. Perhaps, so I thought I'd give it a go, it's a slightly odd reading experience which is perhaps not surprising given it was written years ago.

It's literally a book of two parts. Part 1 has little to do with Utopia being a discussion on the merits or otherwise or hanging thieves.

Told in part 2nd s:   The second book consists of Hythloday's description of the island and people of Utopia, their customs, laws, religions, economy, language and relations with other nations. This book is all about the fictional country called Utopia.
